Scenes 4 - 6 shown below on the storyboard were hugely improvised compared to the rest of the storyboard; as I changed the location. Instead of using Walderslade Woods as the setting for the scene, I decided to film at Chatham Cemetery; which is more accessible to the actor and myself as we just simply took a bus there and back to do some filming. As I've explained earlier I think that they both have a similar atmosphere which I feel works for the nature of the film behind its emotion and sadness.
What essentially happens in Scenes 4 - 6 is that the character begins to go for a walk to somewhere mysterious that she's never been before. It is implied that she's going out for a walk to clear her mind, but she finds the necklace buried in the dirt, so she may be going to retrieve it. I decided to merge all the scenes into a simpler shot like the one shown above; a longer, continuous shot. To summarise, Jane explores somewhere mysterious. As mentioned above, instead of
filming at the woods, I decided to film at a cemetery, without changing really anything else. I also think that a cemetery works better than the woods as the gravestones symbolise something living and then dying; a solemn reminder that nothing lasts forever.
TThe takes were nearly up to a minute long; shot in 4K so they took around 200MB each, so for me as a cinematographer as well as a director, I didn't want to waste too much storage filming takes; I wanted to get the perfect shot.
Here is another take, wherein I was also communicating with the actor in order to get the best possible shot, like on real life film sets where the director communicates with the actors. I didn't use this take or think it was very good because of one mistake; the illusion of the height. Natasha is taller than Reece, so I had to adapt my cinematography to create the illusion that they are of a similar height. The second clip (above) is filmed at my normal height, making Reece look small in the camera, which would have looked odd if the footage was played back. In order to keep things consistent I adjusted the angle.
