I recorded the audio for my cover of the song 'I Don't Care' using the sound booth at UCA. On the left is my setup in the studio for the recording that I made. It shows the amp I used, the electric guitar, the microphone, the headphones and the monitor setup. I positioned the amp in front of the microphone as the sound booth is rather a small space so there was not too much room for the sound to travel throughout, as the guitar was plugged into it. I edited the sound using Adobe Audition to rearrange the tracks. I got to grips using the software with how to record, layer the tracks, as well as use the mute, solo and record functions to concentrate on each layer. The four main layers were the electric guitar layer, the drums, the vocals and the extra vocals on each parts. I was also hoping to record a bass layer too but I was not able to as I didn't have my own bass guitar - as an electric guitar has 6 strings, E, A, D, G, B, E, and a bass guitar has 4 but can have 5 strings; B, E, A, D, and G.

When using the amp, I altered the gain, the treble, middle, bass as well as the tone in order to get a sound that was similar to the electric guitar on the recording, and used the boost button for a fuller, clearer sound. On the screen in the picture below I arranged the layers of the music in sequence. I went and used to the sound booth on four different occasions - and the first time I went the sound was not being picked up as clearly as it was afterwards as you can see on the screen.

For the guitar I used the GuitarTuna app to tune the guitar, as well as the Guitar Tabs app for the notes as I can read TAB but not necessarily the standard notation. Learning the guitar riff was relatively easy and so was playing different parts of the song, however the most challenging part was staying in time. I didn't know how to set the tempo to 133bpm (the tempo of the song) and change the timeline into bars rather than seconds, so I just listened to each section of the song and aligned with the drum beat I recorded from Guitar Tabs as shown below:

This is where I got all the notes and understood the structure of the song as well as recording it. However due to the timing of my project I never got to complete it; so therefore I am continuing it as a personal project rather than as part of this work.

At first I recorded the individual tracks using Adobe Audition - but in the picture above there is the arrangement for the cover song I made using GarageBand. The different layers aren't all vocal layers - I was experimenting with different audio effects for the instruments to make them sound the way they do in the actual song, as well as the extra parts of the song. I chose to use a Modern British Metal sound for the first guitar layer, to really bring out the punk-rock feel of the song.
