As part of my identity project, I used the sound booth to record the audio for a music video I made for a cover of the song 'I Don't Care' by Fall Out Boy, an upbeat punk rock song from the album 'Folié à Deux' French for 'Madness for Two', an alternative rock album released in 2008. It is a song that is very important to me and who I am.
For the band it is a significant transition from emo rock music and power chords to into a more diverse variation of music. The album's release was delayed due to the release of the cover song 'Beat It' prior to starting work on the new album. It also has a more simpler feel to the sound and less multi-layered than Fall Out Boy's previous 2007 album 'Infinity On High' known for the songs 'Thnks Fr The Mmrs' and 'The Take Over, The Break's Over'. The album Folié à Deux was not as commercially successful, although 'I Don't Care' was its lead and arguably most notable single.
It is a song that resonates strongly with me as it is very out there, very cathartic and expresses a strong sense of apathy and the idea of letting things go. This makes the song important to me as it's never been easy for me to let things go, whether it be relationships, arguments or things that people say or think about me. The song mainly helps me to look back on the two most toxic and damaging relationships I have been in which were taxing both mentally and physically. It reminds me of how strong that these experiences with these people have made me and how it doesn't matter to me any more.
Luke Chueh (the artist who created the painting on the album cover) used the title and underlying themes of the album as inspiration for the artwork. He said "The title of the album is Folie à Deux, and when considering this with the band's popularity, I chose to focus on the idea of fandom, and how some people are willing to take their love/infatuation to levels that are obviously unhealthy." I think that he is right in that sense and that relates to the meaning of the song to me.
In short I find it to be a powerful song with a rough edge, and a simple reminder to not stress or care about things you can't change or necessarily have control over - in relationships as well as life in general.
